Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

I have a toddler who is 15 months old, adopted at 12 months. She has woken a few times early from her nap with symptoms that resemble night terrors. Please advise.

Children's sleep patterns can be difficult, and this problem can be made more difficult by changes in circumstance. If your newly adopted 15-month-old child is usually sleeping well, but has "occasional" night terrors, I might observe the pattern to see if these events are decreasing in frequency. Providing the child great levels of assurance, consistency and simplicity in your family life might be beneficial. Try to avoid other changes in routine to see if the toddler settles into your family.
