Adoption Agencies
What You Need to Know about Adoption Agencies
By Charlene Torkelson
The BBB divides agencies into two groups: the public agencies run by the state or county funded through taxpayers and the private agencies, which, in most cases, are licensed by the state and mostly nonprofit funded by the adopting parents and charity donations.
State agencies will generally place children with "special needs," although that may be defined differently in each state. States set a maximum fee cap of $2,000 per adoption, which covers attorney and travel fees. After the adoption procedure is completed, families may qualify to apply for reimbursement of this fee. The private agency fees range from $4,000 to $30,000 depending on the type of adoption. Domestic adoption fees pay for the cost of the birth, counseling and agency overhead. Inter-country adoption fees include court costs, immigration fees and travel.
Each state has its own regulations, which may include how old the perspective parents must be to qualify for domestic adoption, if a private adoption is legal and how long you need to be a resident before you are able to adopt. It may also include a time priod after the adoption where the birth parent(s) may change their mind(s).
