Profile of a Surrogate Mother

The bond between Kat and the intended parents really formed before the transfer. "We had stayed with them for overnight visits and I brought my children to their home on a few occasions separately as well," says Kat. The couple had suffered through 12 years of infertility and a number of failed IVF attempts. "I just admired them for their strength and desire to continue on after so many years of heartbreaks," says Kat. "They have been truly wonderful through all of this."

The pregnancy is going quite smoothly for Kat, "with the exception of a lot of queasiness that generally runs around the clock!" Kat and the intended parents talk every week, sometimes a few times a week and communicate via the computer as well. Kat says her co-workers are very understanding and her husband is extremely supportive. "He's been lending a hand more often now that I am tired all of the time!"

Despite the occasional hurtful, uneducated comment directed at Kat regarding her part in this family creation, she says she's received a lot of positive feedback. "For the most part, people are very understanding and interested in what I am doing," says Kat. "I had one person tell me that I was an angel who was chosen to watch over one of God's most precious creations, and that really makes me feel good. Surrogacy is truly a wonderful way for an infertile couple to have the family that they have been trying to have for so very long."
