Profile of a Surrogate Mother

Imagine being told that you will never carry a child. Devastated. Empty. Alone. Words fail to describe the emotions. Later, as the harsh reality seeps in, your doctor gently presents an opportunity. At first, you are apprehensive, but as you learn more, you are overcome with a wave of hope. You begin to imagine a relationship with another human that is like no other. With great trepidation, you explore the possibility of placing your precious genetic material into another woman in order to have a biological child. You place your trust, hope and part of your soul with a gift-giver -- a surrogate mother.
Eager to do what comes naturally, and most often, pleasurably, to them, surrogates take great joy in bringing a child to a couple that most deeply desires one. It takes a woman strong of heart to give such a gift. Kat is such a woman.
A mother of two of her own biological children, Kat has held and rocked her babies, read bed time stories to faces with wide eyes, watched simple discoveries unfold for her children and the many other treasures of motherhood. "After being blessed with these things, I cannot imagine having to live my life without the very source of such joys – the joys that enable me to live as happily as I do," she says.
When Kat was about 16, maternal instincts began to swell inside her. Kat speaks with great pride about her children, Shawn and Gabriella. Shawn has Down syndrome and absolutely adores his sister, according to Kat. "He is the most lovable and generous child that I have ever met," she says. "Gabby is the apple of Shawn's eye. We have truly been blessed with the children we have."
