Adoption Step by Step
5 Tips to Know Before Starting the Adoption Process
By Teri Brown
"Be careful not to overwhelm the child," Hernandez says. "Let them set the pace for the meeting. The next meeting may be something a little more neutral like a park or museum. It is important not to push this process too fast. Get to know them slowly and give them a chance to get to know you."
The adoption process is one that is filled with varying emotions, and the pre-placement timelines will vary based on the age and needs of the child. Be aware of the emotions the child may have and accept that there will be a time of adjustment for everyone.
"Take the time to get to know each other," Hernandez says. "Plan activities that welcome [the child] into your home and help [him] to feel part of the family. Take pictures of the new family and place them throughout the home to further cement the stability of the family unit."
Other ways to make your adoptive child feel welcome include letting her help to decorate her new room, asking her traditions she has experienced and incorporate that part of her life into your new family and listening to what she says carefully.
"The bond and attachment you have with your child is one of the most special gifts you can share," Hernandez says. "Take the time to get to know each other, sharing your similarities and differences!"
