Adoption Medicine

A Specialty You Need to Know

By Teri Brown

Pages:  1  2  3

  • Psychological support services for grief issues, family bonding, sibling rivalry.
  • Caring for a child throughout the years ahead within the context of their social history.
  • When Stephanie Dower, mother of three from Columbus, Ohio, adopted her first two daughters from Vietnam, she needed all the expert medical help she could get. "For our twin daughters, adopted in Vietnam in 2000, we received absolutely nothing in the way of medicals, so we had to deal with a vast array of exams, tests, etc., on bringing them home," she says. "Our son, adopted in 2002, came with some comprehensive medicals, ultrasounds, social work and doctor reports, so we were able to pinpoint certain conditions and speak with specialists."

The Dowers are in the process of adopting their fourth child, a preschooler who has specific medical conditions. They've consulted with pediatric specialists on these issues in depth and are confident that the transition will go as well as it did with their first three children. Adoption medicine helped the Dowers create a family with lots of love, laughter and health.
