Your Guide to Who's Who During Adoption

Home Study Coordinator: When adopting foster children, the home study coordinator will perform the original home study and then possible follow-up studies.

Case Worker: This is a person who has been involved in the child's life since removal from the family. They are a font of knowledge about your child's situation, behavior and personality.

Judge: The judge is the final stop and is empowered by the state to place the final approval on the adoption process. He or she reviews the paperwork submitted and makes the final verdict as to whether or not the adoption will occur.

The most important aspect to remember about adoption is that if you have a question about the process or about what someone's job is, don't hesitate to ask. By asking questions and educating yourself, you are doing your part to expedite the process and gain your main objective – to bring your child home as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Adoption Tips

The following adoption tips won't make the waiting go by any faster, but they may bring you peace of mind about the process.

  • Do not pay out any money to someone whose credentials cannot be checked.
  • Check references of every agency or lawyer you are considering.
  • If adopting internationally, ask your agency if they have an in-country liaison who will be helping you as soon as you arrive in that country.
  • You can choose any adoption agency in the country, but it is suggested you find one within driving distance of your home. This way you can be immediately available.
  • Remember to ask questions!
