Transitioning into a Family
After Adoption

By Sue Poremba

Wolfe suggests parents take time off work and try to make undivided time to spend withtheir child, especially during that first month. Making the child's transition into the family should be the top priority.

"Adoption is an un-ending commitment, and making the decision to expand your family through adoption should not be entered into without a great deal of thought and preparation," Wolfe says. "It is also important to recognize that adoption is a lifelong journey, one that is only just beginning when you finally have your adoption decree in hand. Keeping an open mind, relying on good supports and being willing to maintain a healthy perspective can help to make your parenting experiences successful."

Tips for Dealing with Depression

Adoptions from the Heart provides the following tips for coping with post-adoption depression syndrome:

  • Talk to your social worker or take adoption classes before and after you begin the process.
  • Don't try to be a super parent. Accept and ask for help.
  • Understand that your feelings are normal. Talk about them with your adoption professionals, spouse, partner, family or friends.
  • Focus on bonding with your child, and give yourself time. It doesn't always happen overnight.
  • Enjoy the process and delight in the rewards.
