A Happy Ending
Our Adoption Experience
By Mike Donoghue
Disheartened by what had happened, we reassessed our situation and received financial assistance from family members so that we could switch to an agency with a more reliable track record. It was the best move we ever made. Within a shorter timeframe than we had expected or been told, we were holding our son in our arms.
Adoption is a serious consideration – in many ways more serious than traditional birth since so much is out of your control and range of experience. It can be draining and requires levelheaded thinking when most of the time you feel like screaming. If you are already fortunate enough to be a birth parent and already know the security of having a child, the process may not affect you the same. But for first-time parents, the emotional issues may seem determined to stop you. The best advice anyone can give you is: Don't give up! You are stronger than you think.
