Disheartened by what had happened, we reassessed our situation and received financial assistance from family members so that we could switch to an agency with a more reliable track record. It was the best move we ever made. Within a shorter timeframe than we had expected or been told, we were holding our son in our arms.

When you start doing research into adoption, you will find there are numerous options, each with their own list of positives and negatives. Start by letting everyone know that you are interested in adoption. There is a large support network out there full of people with good information on what people and what agencies to contact. It might seem odd to treat this decision like a business transaction, but it is important to go in with your eyes and ears open; trust your instincts.

Adoption is a serious consideration – in many ways more serious than traditional birth since so much is out of your control and range of experience. It can be draining and requires levelheaded thinking when most of the time you feel like screaming. If you are already fortunate enough to be a birth parent and already know the security of having a child, the process may not affect you the same. But for first-time parents, the emotional issues may seem determined to stop you. The best advice anyone can give you is: Don't give up! You are stronger than you think.
