A"Use of a friend as a donor is more problematic," says Apel. "Usually, to qualify as a 'donor' and thereby benefit from the insulation from parental rights and duties, the parties must engage the services of a medical professional. That is, one cannot have sexual intercourse or inseminate oneself and claim that the father is simply a donor." Apel also says that some clinics may not go along with a woman's request to use a known donor, as the issue becomes more complex – both emotionally and legally. Other clinics may only use frozen sperm from reputable clinics that screen for diseases like HIV.
