A"Use of a friend as a donor is more problematic," says Apel. "Usually, to qualify as a 'donor' and thereby benefit from the insulation from parental rights and duties, the parties must engage the services of a medical professional. That is, one cannot have sexual intercourse or inseminate oneself and claim that the father is simply a donor." Apel also says that some clinics may not go along with a woman's request to use a known donor, as the issue becomes more complex – both emotionally and legally. Other clinics may only use frozen sperm from reputable clinics that screen for diseases like HIV.

"The joy my daughter brings to me and all of those around me is indescribable," says Lewis. "She has made my life richer, more interesting and fun. She is the love of my life. I can't imagine life without her, and if I am lucky enough someday to meet the right person, that will be wonderful. In the meantime, we are a wonderful family."
