Bringing Adoption into the Light

The Myths About Adoption
and How to Fight Them

By Mark Stackpole

Dr. Tishler also has found that there is a lot of confusion surrounding the process of adoption. "People think that it is very hard to adopt," she says. "My take on it is that if you can apply to college, you can probably apply to adopt. It does take organization, persistence and a lot of time. On the flip side, there are people who think you can hop on a plane, go to a developing country and 'get' a baby." As for the cost, Dr. Tishler found that financial comfort can make the whole process easier, but she has met a lot of adoptive families "who have more love than money."

Given that her daughter, now 3 1/2 years old, is from China, Dr. Tishler found that many people did not really understand how this type of adoption worked. "I have heard things like, 'They don't like girls in China, do they?' or 'They throw away their girls,'" she says. "The word 'abandon' in Chinese means 'left to be found.' I often explain that my daughter and her sisters were left in very open, public places so that they would be found and cared for. I truly believe that their birthparents had to make a horrible choice for themselves and chose to believe that they were giving their daughters a chance at a better life."
