| There are requirements to being a foster parent, says Carrie Cornwall, director of marketing and public relations at Olive Crest Homes and Services for Abused Children. Prospective parents go through a very thorough background check, the same as that for adoptive parents, she says. Although every agency will have its own specific rules, guidelines to expect or consider are as follows: - Demonstrate an ability to accept and integrate a child into the family.
- Exhibit a quality relationship with your own children where applicable.
- Be in good physical and mental health.
- Be aware there may be age requirements.
- Be fingerprinted and cleared through the Department of Justice, Child Abuse Index and FBI.
- Be willing to work with the foster child's natural family members when appropriate.
- Be able to attend and participate in pre-certification training.
