The End Result

Our older son was placed with a fantastic Kindergarten teacher who also had a Master's in Special Education. Many older children being adopted are considered "special needs." Therefore, if your child is placed with a teacher who carries a Master's in Special Education, then consider that a plus. Our son's teacher understood him in many ways. When it came time for his little brother's placement, the principal placed him with the same teacher, because our family had already had a history with this teacher, and she knew how our new adoptive family operated on many levels. This comfortable setting was followed by first grade with yet another amazing teacher.

During the process, go with the flow of excitement, a little trepidation and the comfort in knowing you're well informed of your rights as a parent. As you develop together as a family, no matter what issues surface, you can rest assured that the research you've done and the time you've taken to prepare everyone involved will make for an enlightening and enjoyable educational experience.
