Packing for International Adoption Trips

What to Bring When You Pick up Your Child

"Bring money that is unwrinkled and unmarked," says Sam Wojnilower. "No folds and new bills." You'll need to get in touch with the bank in advance, he adds, to ensure the thousands of dollars will be available when you go to pick it up.

No, this is not for some sinister plot or FBI operation, but money you'll need to cover the fees for an international adoption. Wojnilower, an international adoption social worker and father of three internationally adopted children, explains that while some countries allow you to wire the money in advance, most still prefer that all payments are done in cash that is in pristine condition. Wojnilower and his wife invested in money belts to safely carry the cash.

This, of course, does not include extra spending money one would need to bring along.

Packing for an international adoption requires a checklist that is quite different than one used for a regular vacation or extended trip. You are preparing for a trip that will completely change your life.

Adoption rules and regulations are different in every country, as are the customs and the expectations. Your adoption agency will be able to provide the details you need for your specific adoption, but there are some universal tips to keep in mind when preparing for the trip.

Check the Weather in Advance

Kathy Thompson, of Springfield, Va., adopted her daughter from Ethiopia this past summer. "I thought Africa would be hot, but my trip was at the beginning of the rainy season," she says.

While she was in Ethiopia, the weather was cool and damp, and she did not pack enough warm clothes. She recommends that anyone who is planning to travel for an international adoption check an almanac that will provide information on the type of weather conditions to expect on their trip. Online weather sites should also supply an up-to-date forecast.
