The Foster Mom Diaries
How Fate Changed
One Woman's Life By Teri Foreman
Day TwoI woke up the next morning and my heart was still pounding. Bringing them here was nuts. I must be officially out of my mind. I'm a busy freelance writer with numerous projects on deck at all times. My teens are homeschooled and very active. My daughter is a competitive figure skater. My son holds a job and is active in both the community and his youth group. Add the fact that neither one of them drive yet, and I was already maxed. How could we add three small, troubled children to our family, a family that included five cats and two dogs, a family that lived in a very small house?
One Woman's Life
My husband and I talked it over. We could still bail out of this, but we knew we didn't want to. My 16-year-old son was ambivalent. He isn't fond of change and is the least adaptable of my two children. My 15-year-old daughter had a na love of babies, the kind you have when you get to hand them back to Mommy after babysitting for three hours. She thought it would be fun.
Still, we pride ourselves on trying to raise children who give back to the community. We've made volunteering a priority since they were very small. As preschoolers we delivered meals to shut-ins through our local Meals on Wheels program. We spent years volunteering at the library with the toddler craft time. My son volunteered for two years at the zoo and is a part of our community's Youth Advisory Council.
