The Price of Parenthood
Financing Adoption
By Laura Christianson
Creative Financing
- As soon as you begin dreaming of a child, begin saving. If you are a two-income family, live as if you are a one-income family, socking away as much of one salary as possible into a "child" fund.
- Designate a week from your paycheck to be directly deposited into your "child" account.
- If you moonlight or get a raise, deposit the money into your "child" account. Apply tax refunds to the "child" fund, as well.
- Move to a job that offers excellent infertility and/or adoption benefits.
- Ask whether your infertility or adoption specialist offers discounted fees, sliding scale fees, low-interest loans or refunds (in the event of an unsuccessful treatment or adoption).
- Ask whether your credit union or bank offers a loan program or equity line of credit that you can apply toward fertility treatment or adoption.
- Refinance your home.
- Borrow from your retirement account, stocks, bonds or life insurance policy.
- Ask your family to donate money in lieu of holiday gifts.
- Ask your house of worship for assistance.
- Ask friends to donate books, CDs or DVDs and sell them at eBay or Amazon.com.
- Host a fundraising dinner and auction for which friends sponsor a table and guests pay per plate. Solicit goods and services from restaurants, theaters and contractors for the auction.
- Host a bike-a-thon or walk-a-thon. Ask people to sponsor you or to solicit their own sponsors and join you for a ride/walk.
- Ask a bowling alley to donate several hours on a slow day. Invite friends to join you for an afternoon of bowling for a minimum donation. Provide snacks and beverages and raffle wacky prizes.
